Meeting - Sunday Dec 6th, 2:00 - 3:30 PM
This was a very different election than we had 1 year ago. While we are all grateful that the Democratic Incumbent (Levon Simms) easily won re-election to the Fort Myers City Council for Ward 3 and another Democrat (Teresa Watkins-Brown) maintained Ward 1 for us (Warren Wright did not run). Sadly, we suffered serious losses for Jim Burch in his bid to remain the Mayor of Cape Coral and in Fort Myers Ward 5, despite running an excellent campaign based on years of knowledge and focused on REAL issues, my close friend (and SD-SWFL member) Lydia Lowell-Sherman was not able to overcome the good 'ole boys network. This just shows us that we need to bring out our A game, not just for Obama - but for EVERY Democrat!
Now - on to our next meeting. This will mark our first meeting offering a 50/50 raffle. If you are not familiar, those who choose to participate can purchase a raffle ticket (1 for $1, 6 for $5 or 13 for $10).
At the close of the meeting, a single winning ticket will be drawn and the lucky ticket holder will receive 50% of all money collected. Normally, the rest would be given to our SD-SWFL Treasurer to deposit, but as December is "D.E.C." month, the rest will be donated to the Lee County Democratic Party. Certainly better odds and a better payout than a lottery ticket - and, of course, a great cause - helping get local Democrats elected!
I have two speakers (Mickey Rowe, South Florida Director of Stand Up Florida and Ron Episcopo, Secretary) who will be presenting a full recap of the National Equality March. I have also invited a well known, and well spoken local leader who will present an issue that will directly affect Lee County. Look for full details in your email and mailbox soon.
